For 916 years this monument had been the treasure of the Byzantine Empire and the centre of the Christian Orthodox World and for 418 years it had been the jewel of the Islamic world and the Ottoman Empire. As the most precious and most important mosque to the Ottoman Sultans, it has been the subject of countless legends. The Hagia Sophia is considered as the embodiment of "Divine Power" in both Byzantine and Ottoman sources.
