Introduction and the Merit of Fasting
Educational, Talk Show, 11-Feb-2022
This is the opening session of a Weekend Retreat, a study of Book 6 of Imam al-Ghazali’s Ihya’ ‘Ulum al-Din (Revival of the Religious Sciences).
Allah the Exalted says, O believers! Fasting is prescribed for you—as it was for those before you1—so perhaps you will become mindful ˹of Allah˺. [Quran 2:182] And the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said in a Hadith Qudsi that Allah the Exalted said, “Every good deed is rewarded a multiple of ten to seven-hundred times, except for fasting, for it is Mine, and I grant its reward.” [Bukhari and Muslim] He also said ﷺ, “Paradise has a gate called ‘Rayyān.’ None enter it except those who fast.”
In Imam al-Ghazali’s book on Fasting, he informs us of the obligations of Fasting, the inner dimension and degrees of the fast, and the merit of fasting the recommended days outside of Ramadan.
Objectives:
· Understanding the importance of Fasting
· Learning the fundamental rulings of Fasting, its Sunnas, and what nullifies the Fast
· Learning the inner dimension of Fasting and its degrees
