Brunei's Islamic influence also extended to the southern Philippines, where the Sultanate of Sulu was established as a Muslim state.
Today, Brunei is known for its strong Islamic identity, and the country's legal system is based on Islamic law. The sultanate of Brunei continues to be an important center of Islamic learning, with several prominent Islamic scholars and institutions based in the country.
