Al-Khwarizmi's important works in mathematics, led to him being dubbed the 'father of Algebra'. One of his achievements in algebra was his demonstration of how to solve quadratic equations by completing the square. He was from Khorasan in Uzbekistan and around 820 CE he became the astronomer and head of the library of the 'House of Wisdom' in Baghdad. His most read work 'Al-Kitāb al-mukhtaṣar fī ḥisāb al-jabr waʾl-muqābala' (“The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing”) was translated into Latin and from that the word 'Algebra' was derived.
